Robert Boyd, RS2 No 376674, from Islandmagee, Co Antrim

World War Two submariner

According to his CR10 card, Robert Boyd was born in Islandmagee, Co Antrim on 2 July 1903. He served as an ordinary seaman on Head Line ships from November 1918 until early 1921 so it appears that he was 15 when the photograph was taken.

He later joined the Royal Navy, and commanded submarines during World War Two. He was awarded the DSO in 1942 followed by the DSC in 1944. He was promoted Captain in 1956 and retired from the Royal Navy in 1959.

His father, also Robert, was a merchant seaman and a member of the Royal Naval Reserve. He was called up in August 1914 and served with HMS Carmania in her successful action with the German armed merchant cruiser Cap Trafalgar on 14 September 1914.
