![]() Edward Johnston, RS2 No 119445, from Dundalk, Co LouthLost with SS Dundalk,14 October 1918According to his CR10 card, Edward Johnston was born on 26 May 1874 in Dundalk, Co Louth. He held an engineer’s ticket and was serving as first engineer. His grandson, Eamonn Johnston, informed me that Edward initially worked as an engineer with the Great Northern Railway in Dundalk before going to sea in 1901. He spent most of his seafaring career with the Dundalk and Newry Steampacket Company who operated a passenger, livestock and cargo service between those ports and Liverpool. The SS Dundalk was torpedoed and sunk on 14 October 1918 after leaving Liverpool bound for Dundalk. 20 lives were lost.
