Thomas McLoughlan, RS2 No 305796, from Greencastle, Moville, Co Donegal

Lost with SS St Barchan, 21 October 1918

According to his CR10 card, Thomas McLOUGHLAN was born on 20 July 1894 in Moville, Co Donegal.

A descendant, Richard McCormick, thought he might be Thomas Leo McLAUGHLIN who was killed when the SS St Barchan was lost off County Down with all hands in 1918. His surviving family could not identify the CR10 photograph.

I suspected that the seamen and firemen in the crew would have been issued with identity cards at the same time, just before they were killed, which would mean consecutive RS2 numbers. Richard had the crew details and the relevant information was:-

Thomas McLoughlinRS2 No 305796, seaman
Peter Bradley RS2 No 305797, fireman, b Paisley, 1899. Card marked ‘deceased’
William Rice No CR10 card found, ab, b Ringsend, Dublin 1868.
Patrick Galbraith RS2 No 305799, fireman, b Glenarm, 1899. Card marked ‘deceased’

Note the consecutive RS2 numbers. I have assumed that William Rice’s RS2 No was 305798.

I’m sure that Thomas McLoughlin is the same man as Thomas Leo McLaughlin.
